Each blade of grass was selected for its unique coloration and position to duplicate the grass edges found all over the country. Low-maintenance, Red October needs pruning in early spring to a few inches above the ground and division every 3-5 years to keep them neat, tidy, and growing vigorously. The thatch background, with its small grass moving from light to dark spots, creates the perfect depth and distance from the larger blades to give Shadow Grass Blades a realistic 3D appearance and superior ability to break up a hunter’s outline. Using these two elements, we set out to create the perfect pure grass pattern by arranging each blade of grass in natural positions with shadows falling across each other on a thatch background. After photographing a variety grass blades along water edges and flooded fields, we saw that each BLADE was unique, and was most often accompanied by a thatch background of dead or pressed-down lesser grass. With over 30 years in pattern development, we concluded that the most versatile and effective waterfowl pattern was one comprised entirely of grass. The powder blue foliage is extra wide reminiscent of a big bluestem. Make sure that your herbicide is “kind” to the seeds you choose to plant. Schizachyrium scoparium Sandhill is on the tall side at 4 plus. These herbicides will kill some of the plants that I have listed, so read your herbicide instructions and know what you’re dealing with. It will kill the existing vegetation and provide residual control for several weeks after planting. It’s a mixture of imazapic and glyphosate. Switchgrass, big bluestem, and indiangrass are native warm-season grasses that can provide abundant, high-quality forage during summer. Journey is another herbicide that is easier to acquire. However, this herbicide can damage certain legumes and forbs and can sometimes be difficult to obtain. If you are doing one of those “by the book” projects with the NRCS or FSA you’ll definitely want to use Plateau. It is the only herbicide that I know of that is devised specifically to control a wide range of unwanted grasses and broadleaf weeds, while allowing most native warm-season grasses to live. While glyphosate will work for this, I would suggest Plateau (Imazapic). First, you should do a soil test and you must totally eliminate the existing competition. They are very leafy at the base with some leaves on the stem. You must be precise in seedbed preparation. Bluestem grasses (Andropogon gerardi) are warm season grasses.
